SYNOPSIS |
|
|
|
Research into knowledge management and students’ learning styles have shown that visual information will make students remember information and hence lead to better understanding of the content of a subject. A concept map is a diagram of nodes and propositions. Each proposition containing two boxed concepts that are linked together with labeled directional lines. The concept nodes are arranged in hierarchical levels that move from the most inclusive and most general to specific concepts. It is a visual way to represent the interrelation between the concepts that students are supposed to have learned in any learning activity. It is a sort of a map to represent the simplicity or complexity of a concept and how the concept is related to other concepts that the students have constructed cognitively. The concept map is highly contextualized and it answers a certain focus question.. For example, the concept of force is linked to the concept of motion by the linkword, produces, which can then becomes a proposition and read as “force produces motion”. |

This workshop will introduce the use of a hierarchical (hierarchy) concept map freeware developed by Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) to construct concept maps. Participants will first manually identify concepts and linkwords from a paragraph of text and then manually convert the paragraph into a visual concept map.. Following this, participants will then construct, structure and share the concept maps created through the features provided by the software. |

1. Describe the role of concept maps as evidence of understanding. |

2. Construct a simple concept map on paper. |
|

3. Construct a simple concept map using the IHMC software. |

4. Construct two types of concept maps used for assessment. |

5. Modify the structure and the make-up of the concept maps. |
